Gustavo Fallas was born in Costa Rica in 1974 and studied theater at the Castella Conservatory. He has received scholarships to study film in Montreal, Paris, Madrid and London. He wrote and produced the short films "La Piñata" (1995), selected for the Havana Film Festival; "Variaciones sobre un mismo crimen" (1998), winner at the Costa Rican Film Showcase; "Atrapar un ruiseñor" (2005), selected for the Ícaro International Festival and the Central American Showcase at Biarritz; and Bajamar (2009), selected for the Costa Rican Film Showcase and winner of three awards at the Ícaro International Festival. With his debut feature film, Puerto Padre (2013), he received the Morelia LAB award for Best Latin American Project, the Work in Progress Award at SANFIC, Chile, the Global Film Initiative scholarship (United States), the Cinergia Scholarship (Central America) and the Proartes Grant in Costa Rica. The film was selected by the Ibermedia Fund and won the Silver Zenith award for Best Film Debut at the Festival des Films du Monde in Montreal. Puerto Padre has won eight awards, including Best Direction, Best Script and Best Film at the Costa Rica International Film Festival (Paz Con La Tierra). At the Ícaro International Festival in Guatemala it won Best Editing and Best Actress, and it was selected for the Guadalajara International Film Festival, the International Film Festival of Panama, the Festival Latino in Tübingen, Germany, the CineMundi International Festival in Brazil, and the Chicago Latino Film Festival, among others.
