William Armstrong was born in Botswana, Africa and studied philosophy at University of Cape Town, South Africa, where he first became interested in filmmaking through the informal film society. After moving to Dublin, Ireland, he met and was influenced by a young generation of filmmakers breaking out internationally in both films and TV commercials. William began making short, visual work as a way to enter the TV commercials industry, and enjoyed success with his first 'test' winning a Young Director Award at the Cannes Lions festival of creativity, earning William credibility that allowed him to focus on directing full time. In the following years, he became an experienced car commercials director, honing his skills on projects in the short form industry. In 2018 he directed his first short film, Adam which went to to earn the Emerging Director Award at the One Screen film festival in New York City. The next year he directed New Day, a narrative music video about train surfers set in Zimbabwe which was shortlisted at the Cannes Lions, Webby Awards and Kinsale Shark Awards. During the pandemic lock down, William completed Unspoken, his second short film which was selected to world premiere at Tribeca film festival in 2021. William is now based between Denmark and the UK.
