Joz Norris was born in Chichester to pianist and musicologist David Owen Norris and singer and artist Fiona Clarke. While growing up he moved between Petworth, London and Salisbury, where he attended Bishop Wordsworth's School before studying English Literature at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. In Norwich he met comedians John Kearns, Jon Brittain and Tom Moran, who encouraged him to steer his writing skills towards comedy. After starting to perform stand-up comedy and writing several comedy scripts at university, Norris moved to London to pursue a career in comedy in 2011. From 2012 to 2017 he wrote and performed six acclaimed solo comedy shows of stand-up, character comedy, storytelling and other nonsense, the last of which was released as a filmed special on Amazon Prime and NextUp. During this time he also performed regularly with comedy collectives such as Weirdos, Comedians' Cinema Club, the Alternative Comedy Memorial Society and Heroes of Fringe and has become as well-known for his collaborative work as for his solo shows. In 2016 he announced an intention to focus less exclusively on live comedy work and to increase his film output, and from 2016 to 2018 he has written, produced and starred in four of his own short films as well as several other online sketches and web series. He also frequently appears in other comedy shorts, web series and TV shows.
