For 33 years, Roger Carlson was the owner of Bookman's Alley, a well-known and beloved bookstore located in Evanston, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. One of his customers was the street photographer Vivian Maier, to whom he would occasionally loan money. Another customer was Audrey Niffenegger, who featured the bookstore in her 2003 novel "The Time Traveler's Wife".
