Richard Van's parents came from Vietnam and he grew up in Fremont, California.After getting a BA in philosophy he went to South Korea to teach English and then returned to Cal Arts where he got an MFA.In his work he has been using an improvisational method similar to that of film directors John Cassavetes and Mike Leigh.
