Raised on a working horse ranch in Montana, Guthrie could often be found on the road playing engagements with his musician father, or on trips with his stewardess mother, taking in three or more films during layovers between international flights. As a youth he worked for nearly a decade at his local cinema, working his way up to projectionist and in the process screening, by his estimation, "just about every film to achieve wide release in the 1990's." While, attending college at Pepperdine University in Malibu, a serendipitous sequence of events led to him spending a summer as the house guest in a guest house owned by screen legend Jeff Bridges, from whom he received guidance and mentorship in the craft. After nearly a decade touring the country with a Rock and Roll band, Guthrie recommitted himself to his passion for Cinema, quickly landing a lead role in an indie film before helming an imaginative Sci-Fi flick called Encounters.
