Chen Xu, sound designer, director, and screenplay writer. Originally from Wuhan, China. Chen graduated with a bachelor degree in Film Sound Design from Beijing Film Academy in 2003. Chen's work as a location sound mixer and sound designer can be heard in a variety of genres of films, and was nominated for the Best Sound Effects Award for his work in The Summer is Gone by the 53rd Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival. Chen graduated from Chapman University with a M.F.A. in Film Directing in 2017. He is particularly interested in using film as a medium to present the conflicts and interdependence between individuals and society, with an emphasis on the psyche, mood, mental course, and the state of being of an individual during his struggle against social transformation. The topics of his films touch different people from various layers of society with all kinds of jobs, ranging from the struggles of mining workers at the bottom of society in poor mining towns, the middle-age crisis of urban middle class, the love stories of China's post-80s who are forced to believe that nothing lasts forever, and the struggles of international students who aspire to become part of the Hollywood. Examples of his short films include Witness (2017), Summer Orange (2017), and It's Not Just About a Film (2017).
