"The choices we make as filmmakers are shaped by how we grew up, how we feel and how we see things." He began his experience as a screenwriter and director of short films during his formative years at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, from which he graduated in 1994. He subsequently joined the independent production company Good Machine, collaborating, among others, on works by Ang Lee and Todd Haynes, while teaching at Columbia University and the Universität der Künste Berlin. In 1997 he returned to live in Berlin as a screenwriter and series director, while also realizing film projects of his own. In 2015 he presented Jack at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival, a film that won the German Film Prize. Later, in 2022, he released All Quiet in the Western Front, a film that revolutionized the industry and festivals, winning more than twenty awards worldwide, including the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
