Júlio Bressane (Rio de Janeiro, 1946) is a filmmaker and a leading figure of Cinema Marginal, a movement defined by creative independence and the disruption of traditional narrative forms. He began his career with Cara a Cara (1968) and established an authorial aesthetic in works such as O Anjo Nasceu and Matou a Família e Foi ao Cinema (1969). Co-founder of Belair Filmes with Rogério Sganzerla, he produced experimental films during Brazil’s military regime. Exiled in the early 1970s, he directed abroad before returning to Brazil, where he expanded collaborations with popular artists and explored literary and historical themes. His cinema combines poetic language, fragmented narrative, and musical composition as a structural element.
