"I always want to make films. I think of it as a great opportunity to comment on the world in which we live." Kathryn Bigelow is an American director and screenwriter who made history in 2010 when she became the first woman to win the Academy Award for "Best Director" for her hit film The Hurt Locker (2008). Bigelow, whose career began in her late 50s, broke down barriers in Hollywood with a style characterized by the absence of grandiloquent speeches and a visual style in which shots, treated almost like paintings, tell the story without words. Her first film, The Loveless (1981), marked the beginning of a career defined by the use of complex characters that face moral dilemmas in extreme situations. Her realistic approach, blending documentary elements with a creative narrative, creates total immersion in the action and keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. Bigelow has made a name for herself with films such as Zero Dark Thirty (2012) and Point Break (1991), which tackle issues such as war, morality, and contemporary problems from an untold point of view. With each film, she challenges the canon and shows how cinema can be intense, provocative, and deeply human, as well as a tool for speaking out about social issues.
