In 1972, Alsmann founded his first band called the "Heupferd Jug Band", with which he produced three records. From 1977 he studied German, journalism and musicology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. He received his doctorate in musicology in 1984 with his dissertation entitled: "Nothing but noise. The independent record companies and the development of American popular music 1943-1963". Meanwhile, he played in the band "Sentimental Pounder" from 1980 to 1988. In 1988 he founded the "Götz Alsmann Band". From 1985 onwards he also started a career as a radio presenter at WDR. Here he accompanied the WDR programs "Professor Bop Show" and "On the Wings of Colorful Dreams" from 1986 to 1995. In 1986 he became the WDR TV presenter of the program "Roxy - the magazine for young adults". In addition to other moderations, he hosted the program "High Life" for the RIAS TV channel from 1990 to 1993. In 1992 he worked for RTL and hosted the program "Gong Show". From 1993 to 1994 he hosted the show "Avanti" at VOX, before Alsmann hosted the NDR Spät-Show from 1994 to 1996. Götz Alsmann became known to a large TV audience from 1996 onwards through the WDR program "Zimmer frei". In the entertainment program, designed as a talk show, Alsmann and his colleague Christine Westermann lead through the program in which the guests apply for a fictitious place in a shared apartment. In 2000, the "Zimmer frei" format was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize. Götz Alsmann received the Jazz Award for his musical work in 1999, 2000 and 2003. In 2004 Alsmann received the "ECHO" music prize. In 2006 he was awarded the "Golden Tuning Fork". In 2007 he released the albums "Zirkus Alsmann - The Best" and "My Secret". In 2011 he was appointed honorary professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University. Here he taught the history of popular music. In 2012, Alsmann received the "ECHO" for the second time. On September 25, 2016, the last program "Zimmer frei" was broadcast on WDR after 694 regular episodes. In his private life, Götz Alsmann is married and has a son.
