Velvet Andrews Smith grew up in Tucson, Arizona before moving to Tacoma, Washington, where she graduated from high school. She earned a double bachelor's degree in Communications and Political Science at the University of Washington in Seattle. After a two-year stint in television news, Velvet moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career writing and directing. She got her foot in the door of the industry when she was selected for the Directors Guild of America Assistant Directors Training Program. She first joined the guild as an assistant director where she learned from dozens of film and television directors. After nearly a decade working on a diverse array of productions, Velvet started writing, directing and producing her own films. Velvet was one of 8 women selected to make a film for the American Film Institute Directing Workshop for Women. Her writing and directing also opened the door the ABC Directing Program, where she shadowed veteran directors on several TV shows. In 2016, Velvet directed her first episode of television for "The Fosters" on the Freeform Network. She continues to write and develop original screenplays to direct in the future. Velvet is married with two children and resides in Los Angeles.
