François Aubry entered the world of filmmaking at the National Film Board of Canada where he spent 10 years training with pioneer of the medium such as Sydney Goldsmith, Colin Low, Eric Chamberlain, and interacting with Wally Gentleman, Gille Tremblay and Sue Gourley (for special visual effects techniques). Goldsmith and Gentlemean where part of the team that established for six months the very first outfit for shooting models and compositing the effects for 2001; A Space Odyssey. Aubry obtains a grant (Research and Innovations - Quebec) to further explore a new effects system that he invented. As Supervisor of Visual effects he collaborated intensely with the Visual Effects Studio at the NFB, and worked with twice academy award nominated director Ishu Patel on setting up new strategies for using the rostrum camera as an horizontal field camera adapting a computer assisted periscope to the lens. His work at the board includes 16 film projects such as George's Island, Jesus of Montreal, The Measure of your Passage, Salt Water People, Mirrors of Time and effects for his own films that he directed, Concerto Grosso Modo, Nocturnes, and Seurat: The Realm of Light. He founded his own effects studio in association with Film Opticals of Canada, where he supervises the visual effects of over 50 movie productions including Highlander III: The Sorcerer, G2, Silent Trigger. and worked with directors Denys Arcand, Atom Egoyan, Patricia Rozema, Denis Villeneuve among others. In 2000, he returns to directing, shooting and editing documentaries (On The Road with La Mouette, NFB) and over 30 other documentaries shot in 5 continents. He recently completed 29 more documentaries, this time closer to home, and produced by Bell Media (2017). Aubry recently adopted the new Dedolight Lightstream® system as a means to create a new look for independent productions. He has received awards such as the Silver Apple, Red Ribbon, the Chris Award and Gold Medal (Huston) and Best in Category - Fine Arts in Birmingham, as well as nominations for Gini and Gemini Awards. Aubry lived in Toronto where he works both in French and English.
