Barry Ellsworth was born and raised in New York City. He graduated from Brown University. In 1987 he founded Apparatus Productions with Todd Haynes and Christine Vachon. He collaborated with Haynes on several films, including the underground classic Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, and Poison, and co-produced several films with Vachon. He co-produced the documentaries Story of a Kidnapping and Fire Eyes, as well as directing Jack and The North West Wind, Snowblind and Tommy's with Steve Buscemi
