Mark Hambourg was a Russian/British concert pianist who also appeared in films. In 'The Common Touch' he is actually performing Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto in B flat minor, op23. The piece was very popular among all classes. There exist recordings by Mark Hambourg which are well respected among classical audiences. The interleaving concert performance and his solo in a basement is a great metaphor for the film's theme.
