Maxwell "Sonny" Goldberg was the owner and operator of a number of hotels in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from Atlantic City High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After his return, became a realtor in Philadelphia. In 1957, with his partners, he opened the Monterey Hotel in Atlantic City; this was the first of a number of properties he would either construct, own or operate in Atlantic City, either singly, or with his longtime business partner Milton Neustadter; Goldberg eventually shared the position of chairman of the board of what would become Caesars Atlantic City; he also was co-owner of the Million Dollar Pier, the Boardwalk Bowl and the Steel Pier. Goldberg was one of the leaders behind the push to bring casino gambling to Atlantic City.
