Sophie Kotanyi was born in Budapest in 1953. When she was four, she followed her parents as they fled Hungary for Brussels, where she lived and grew up until the age of eighteen. She then emigrated again, choosing to study filmmaking in Berlin. A renowned documentarist, most of her films are about Africa. In 1985, she returned to Brussels where she made an interesting documentary about Marie Denis, a Belgian journalist and writer, "Dis-moi, Marie...".
