Andrew Kotting made his directorial debut with Gallivant which won him Channel 4's Best New Director Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 1996. He then co wrote This Filthy Earth with Sean Lock with whom he'd worked with on Smart Alex and went through eight drafts of This Filthy Earth before he had a finished script then brought together the main members of his crew and started to look for suitable locations before deciding on the Yorkshire Dales after spending 10 days driving round them. Having settled on the location site a construction crew was brought in to build the village for the film. A budget of £1.2 million, less than what was hoped for, was gathered from the Film Council lottery money, the East London Film Fund, the Yorkshire Media Producton Agency and British Screen
