She came to Los Angeles in 1996 after living in Washington State for 12 years. Before that, she had lived in California, Japan, and Hawaii with her career Navy father, mother, and sister. Shannon began her professional animation career working for Sony Pictures Family Entertainment, and also worked at Nickelodeon and did consultant work for the Voltron: The Third Dimension (1998) series. Other notable employment highlights include two years as the Book Buyer/Administrative Assistant for the Los Angeles-based The Writers Store (which has served Hollywood writers and filmmakers since 1982), Project Management Coordinator at Animation World Network (AWN.com), and having been an office assistant at Michael Ovitz's television venture Artists Television Group. Shannon also has written columns and a book on the industry entitled Gardner's Guide to Writing and Producing Animation, in addition to published short stories in the mystery genre ranging from investigative reporters to private investigators to amateur sleuths. For the latter work, as well as her research in library and information science, she is sometimes known as Shannon Muir Broden or Shannon Broden. She has a BA in Radio-TV and English from Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington, where she graduated cum laude and was mentored by the late David Terwische. In 2001, Shannon completed a Certificate in Screenwriting for Television and Film from UCLA Extension. In 2005, she received an MA in Communications from California State University, Fullerton, and in process working on a Masters of Library and Information Science with an anticipated graduation date of December 2024. She's also worked on animated series for several other studios including Nickelodeon and remains active in the animation industry. Her work also ventured into the casual games/virtual worlds area upon becoming Resource Manager at the website Neopets.com in November 2007. She would later go on to work in Production on the now closed Neopets spin-off virtual world Petpet Park, helping with its launch and creating initial new lands, eventually moving into Quality Assurance until her layoff in June 2011. She has since done other web-related quality assurance work, including for the now-closed Disney Mom & Family website Spoonful.com and other entertainment websites. Later, she used that interest to move into emerging technology and virtual worlds related to library and information science, where she also goes by the avatar name Kreatya Shannon. In 2015, Shannon married her sometimes creative partner, Kevin Paul Shaw Broden, who has also written for Midnight Horror School (2003).
