Sam Nicholson was born in Texas in 1919, and moved with his family to Los Angeles in the 1920's. He demonstrated a talent for drawing at a very young age, and was hired by Warner Bros. right out of high school to work in their animation division. During World War II, he served in the Navy doing training films. After the war, he married and entered the TV industry serving as art director and eventually directing episodes of Crusader Rabbit, King Leonardo and His Short Subjects, and Fractured Fairy Tales. He founded his own animation company, Nicholson Films, in the early 1960's, providing animation for commercials and later directing the TV series, The Funny Company. After shuttering his company in the 1980's, he worked freelance on Garfield specials, The Charley Brown & Snoopy Show, Galaxy High, as well as some series for Hanna-Barbera.
