Liam O'Leary was born in Youghal, Co. Cork. He was among the founder members of the Irish Film Society in 1936. He worked as a theatre director before producing documentaries in the 1940s. The Irish political party, Clann na Poblachta, invited him to make a film to show the urban poverty that existed at the time. This was Our Country (1948). He worked at the National Film Archive, London, from 1953 to 1965.
