Born in Caracas, Venezuela. His father was a photography and film aficionado. He studied at The Choate School, then to Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographiques IDHEC (Paris) and USC and UCLA Film Schools. He made his first short film (Genevilliers Port de Paris) while at film school in Paris. His major breakthrough, after writing and directing more than 26 short films and being an AD in three major international features, was with The Moving Picture Man (1977) with Juliet Berto, Asdrubal Meléndez and Alvaro Roche. Since then he has directed three more features, opera and theater.
