Robert Ronan attended Hofstra College where he appeared in numerous college productions. After graduating from college in the late 1950s, Ronan appeared in summer stock and touring company productions and became a regular performer with Joseph Papp's Shakeseare in the Park, a summer series of plays performed in New York City's Central Park. He also appeared in several plays at Papp's downtown Public Theater and directed and starred in a memorable production of 'Trelawny of the Wells' at Papp's theater.
