Monica was born in the south of Brazil and has produced films since the 80's. She started directing documentary films in 1997, and has been working among the two functions (director and producer) since then. She studied architecture and history, and already worked with theater and music. In 1994, Monica founded M. Schmiedt, a production company. As a director and producer she made three films: The feature documentary "Southern Extreme", (co-directed with Sylvestre Campe), winner of 9 awards, it was selected for IDFA 2004 and received the Gran Prix at the Trento film festival in 2005; The medium-length "Antarctica, The Last Continent", both films shot in cold and inhospitable locations; And "Sweet Dutch Brazil", made for TV, was shot in Germany, Brazil and The Netherlands. It first screening was at the It's All True - 15th International Documentary Film Festival. Among the movies on which she was the executive producer are the feature films "Anahy de las Misiones" (a hit with the audiences in Brazil); "O Quatrilho" (nominated for an Academy Award (OSCAR) for Best Foreign Film in 1996) and "Posthumous Memories", all historical films; the medium-length documentary film "The Invention of Childhood" (19 awards at movie festivals) and the short "The Island of Flowers" (winner of the Silver Bear for best short, in the Berlin FilmFestival, 1990). In 1994, she opened M. Schmiedt, a film company, that produces for television and cinema. Its next feature film project, "Horse Hands", was awarded with the Programa Petrobras Cultural prize. Her first TV series project, "Filhos Prodigos", is a co-production with the Brazilian director Liliana Sulzbach.
