Biography

"Animation is the epitome of cinematic structure, from developing characters, physical spaces, stories, music and sound. As you move forward you find there is a lot you can do with those skills." In 1965, she graduated from Cranbrook Academy of Art with a major in painting, and since then she lived and worked in Europe, Mexico, New York, Los Angeles and New Mexico. In 1968, she began making animated films inspired by her paintings, characterized by a surrealist style. Although her best known film is Asparagus, premiered as an installation at the Whitney Museum in 1979 and screened for a long time alongside David Lynch's Eraserhead, her work includes an extensive and highly personal oeuvre, which includes installations, plays, multimedia shows and clothing design. Her films have been featured at festivals such as the Sundance Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, the London Film Festival, the Ottawa International Animated Film Festival and the Image Forum Film Festival in Tokyo, making her one of the “queens” of animation.
