Charles Butch Van Artsdalen

Charles ''Butch'' Van Artsdalen champion surfer and all around athlete excelled in surfing holding several titles. Born in Virginia, Butch grew up in La Jolla California where he honed his surfing skills. A natural born athlete Butch lettered in varsity Baseball, Basketball and Football all 3 years at La Jolla High School. Butch was a pioneer in the Big Wave surfing at Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach in Hawaii. Butch appeared in several surf movies and was a member of the Duke Kahanamoku Surf Team. He died in Hawaii July 18, 1979.
