Vikki Vargas was born in the city of Downey, California, with her upbringing in nearby Orange County. As a graduate of Cal State Fullerton, she majored in Communications, which aided her in her career base. Soon after graduation, she began her news career on a public access station in Brea, California, and then on to KOCE-TV in nearby Huntington Beach, where she was a writer/researcher, and then ultimately joined KNBC-TV in Los Angeles where she has been since 1982. Over the past twenty years with NBC, Vargas has received many commendations which consist of a recent Golden Mike Award in 2002. She has done landmark reporting which included detailed coverage of the opening of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, and the 1994 Northridge Earthquake where she quickly moved to cover damaged landmarks in the central Orange County area. She is a leader in Southern California news, and well respected by her peers, and television viewers. When not reporting breaking news, or running the Orange County NBC Bureau Office, she enjoys spending time with her husband and children in the southern Orange County City of Irvine.
