Born 1882 in Slarn, Llandaff, South Wales, son of Henry Southwell Cardell (Publican, b. 1856 d. 1912) and Sarah Ann Drew (b. 1856 d. 1907). Educated at Clifton Grammar School (Bristol). He then spent three years in London under Herman Vezin, and later, for five years, was with the Vitagraph Company in America where he supervised the production of over 80,000 ft of the O. Henry stories. Married Faith Madeleine Gatwood in New York in 1917. One child called John Southwell. Eventually settled in Australia. Date of death unknown.
