After growing up performing in theater, James transitioned to writing his own plays, musicals, and sketch comedy in Chicago. A production of his play Love Is Dead: A Necromantic Musical Comedy traveled to New York and caught the attention of Marvel Comics editors who invited him to write X-Men comics. His work since has expanded to include developing and scripting television, video games, and several comic book publishers. In 2014 his work on Valiant Entertainment's comic book Quantum & Woody netted four nominations from The Harvey Awards, including "Best Writer" and "Best New Series".
