He appeared in a number of hotels and night clubs, and sang with the Dick Jurgens dance band, finally leading his own band in 1941, with which he made many records. He was the lead performer, singer and conductor on the NBC Radio series "Carton of Cheer". Joining ASCAP in 1941, his other popular-song compositions include "My Last Goodbye", "If I Knew Then", "Now I Lay Me Down to Dream", "Something Old - Something New", "For Sale", "With Love", "Lonesome Tonight", "Lynn", and "So Long For Now". He was unable to sight-read music, which was discovered by a fellow band member at a rehearsal.
