Born and raised in Norwalk Iowa, Tom went on to the University of Iowa where he met and occasionally worked with Chris Smith. Following the filming of "Tom Wheeler" in which Smith films Wheeler throwing a motorcycle from the back of a speeding pick-up truck, Chris invited him to join the production of "American Job" as "Tom" the foreman who trains Randy - unsuccessfully. After graduation, Wheeler took a production assistant position at Fox Animation Studio in Phoenix, Arizona which eventually led to the Editorial department. Here he became the department general assistant editor, sound reader, and live action recordist among many other titles. Features produced for the screen include "Anastasia," and "Titan A.E." with "Bartok the Magnificent" for the video market. Once the Studio closed in 1999, he returned to Des Moines to renew previous ties to the special event production industry. Events produced here led to the Iowa Department of Economic Development where he was the Manager of the Iowa Film Office from January, 2004 to September, 2009.
