Jack Eric Williams was a promising composer, lyricist, actor, and teacher who is most remembered for creating the role of Beadle Bamford in the original Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. In addition to his work as a performer, he wrote many scores for the theatre, including incidental and dance music. He received the Richard Rogers award in 1990 from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters for his musical Swamp Gas and Shallow Feelings. He died in 1994 from cardiac arrest after several months in a diabetic coma.
