Lola Laszlo was the stepdaughter of Hungarian playwright Aladar Laszlo. She committed suicide by jumping from the 10th floor apartment of Baron Frederick von Oppenheim, a German banker and industrialist. Laszlo had dined with the Baron at the St. Regis Hotel the Friday prior to her death, where she wrote him a note that included the line, "I lost my last orchid in you. Farewell." Laszlo's despondent mother, Yolanda, committed suicide the following September by taking an overdose of sleeping pills.
