Born Dorothea Elizabeth Brown in Portland, Maine, she started her career with her 3 aunts, Dot, Muriel & Eldra (she took her mother's place after her untimely death in an auto accident), as "The Four Chapman Sisters" locally and then went on to New York City where they worked on the Keith & Orpheum Circuit as "The Four Eddy Sisters", and "The Four Real Sisters". She took the stage name of Betty Real and went on to star in the "Ziegfeld Follies". She was a featured dancer in "Hot Cha" with Hal Le Roy, 'Mitzi Mayfield' & Bert Lahr. She was also one of only two women to lead an all male band, "Betty Real and her Rhythm Boys". She made the cover of Billboard Magazine in March 28, 1936! Also featured in her band was trumpet player Andy Pine (her uncle and husband to Dot Chapman Pine). She was under contract with Warner Brothers and made several films, one in particular with Claude Raines titled: _Crime Without Passion (1934)_, and did several ads for Palmolive Soap and Camel cigarettes.
