Joel Yamaji is a second-generation Japanese immigrant to Brazil. He graduated in film from the University of São Paulo in 1978, where he currently teaches. He has directed 17 films, including short and medium-length films, focused on capturing atmospheres and imagery. His works include "Cafundó" (1986), about descendants of enslaved Africans, and the tetralogy on death, consisting of "Impressões para Clara" (1998), "Nunca Me Vamos Dormir Demais" (1999), "Flowers for the Dead" (2000), and "A Ira" (2003). "Alma Errante – Hibakusha" is his first film with a Japanese-Brazilian theme.
