Lt. Nielsen was the navigator on the sixth B-25 of the Doolittle Raid, Apr. 18, 1942. They bombed their target in Tokyo and flew on to crash land on the Chinese coast. Two of the crew died in the landing and the remaining three were quickly captured by Japanese troops. Lt. Nielsen spent over three years as a POW in brutal conditions before being rescued at the end of the war.
