Dan Harmon is an American writer, producer, voice artist, and showrunner whose career began in improvisational comedy in Milwaukee with troupes like ComedySportz Milwaukee and The Dead Alewives alongside collaborator Rob Schrab. Early on, Harmon and Schrab transitioned from live comedy to short films and web-based sketches under Channel 101, a platform they co-founded to showcase original creations. Through that process, Harmon developed narrative techniques and storytelling instincts for screenwriting. Over time, he moved into television and animation, creating and producing series, writing scripts, overseeing writers’ rooms, and participating in voice work. His working method often employs a structured storytelling framework — his so-called “story circle” — to build plots systematically.
