Bappaditya Roy was born in Calcutta. Growing up, he had a great fondness for the arts and crafts, and was an avid painter. After school, he applied and was admitted to the National Institute of Design (NID), India's most prestigious design school. There, he studied visual communication and specialized in film & video. Bappaditya Roy has made a number of short films and documentaries. He made a critically acclaimed documentary on painter MF Hussain and architect BV Doshi (while still at NID). He also made a biopic on legendary actor Naseeruddin Shah, titled The Philosopher Athlete. Researched extensively and shot across the country, the fifty-minute docudrama was an attempt to unravel the genius of Naseeruddin Shah. It was telecast on National Television (Doordarshan). He directed his first feature film, Sau Jhooth Ek Sach aka The uninvited in 2005. An allegorical tale - set as a thriller - that spoke of the excesses of the capitalist class in the New India, the film starred one of India's finest actor Mammooty in the lead role. Sau Jhooth Ek Sach received critical acclaim, especially for its rich and deeply layered visual style. It also won the 2nd prize at the Lyon Film festival in France. Bappaditya Roy also has a special interest in social communication and has partnered with various NGOs to create films on social issues. A film on domestic violence won him a silver at the Ad Film Fest 2007; another film (for Help Age India) won a silver medal at the Indian Documentary Producers Association 2007. A promo he created for Ogilvy and the television channel, Star Plus, also won gold (best reality promo category) at the 2010 Promax BDA Awards. Bappaditya Roy is also closely associated with the advertising world. He worked as an art director, with Ogilvy as well as Lowe, and has been consistently making TVCs for the last twenty years.
