Byron Livernois was born in Newport, Rhode Island. He attended the University of Rhode Island where he wrote for the Great Swamp Gazette and graduated with a degree in psychology. While working on his second degree at the University of Illinois-Chicago, he became a film enthusiast. Not having a television and living in Hyde Park prompted him to attend films at one of the University of Chicago's three separate film series on a nightly basis. This coupled with lectures at the Art Institute inspired him to write his first film.
