Studied social work and law. 1977 to 1979 social worker at Berlin-Tegel Prison. 1985 second state examination and admission to the bar. Since 1979 member of the West Berlin Alternative List; 2000 to 2001 party chairwoman of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen. 1989 to 2000 member of the Berlin House of Representatives; 1989 to 1990 and 1998 to 2000 parliamentary group chairwoman of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen. Member of the Bundestag since 2002; 2001 to 2005 Federal Minister for Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture, since October 2005 Chairwoman of the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen parliamentary group.
