Jean Charles Counet NSC is an Amsterdam based cinematographer, member of the Netherlands Society of Cinematographers and film director working on documentary films, feature films and cross media projects all around the world. He was born in the Netherlands, studied film direction and cinematography at the Sint Lukas Institute in Brussels and lived for 2 years in Latvia where he directed 2 middle length documentaries. In pre-corona time he travelled to many places for filming. He has been filming in challenging environments like Spitsbergen, Iceland, Kamchatka (Russia), Papua New Guinea, Congo and Ukraine. Counet loves working on documentaries as he gets a chance to meet amazing and inspiring people, capture their stories and show it to the audience leaving the footprint of his point of view on them. In documentary filmmaking, he searches and discovers the boundaries of contemporary cinematography. In fiction, he challenges himself to take care of the authenticity for every moment he shoots. They say his filming style is intuitive and subtle. Jean Charles loves to find a balance of what an image shows and what it suggests. He creates images both intuitively and conceptually. It makes the collaboration with the director and the sound designer central to the co-creation of the moment. He admires the work of Christopher Doyle, Krzystof Kieslowski, Andrej Tarkovski, Artavazd Pelechian, Marcel Lozinki, Herz Frank, Joachim Trier, Kar-Wai Wong, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Pirjo Honkasala and Victor Kossakovsky. Counet loves the photography of Saul Leiter, Gueorgi Pinkhassov, Bill Henson, Laura el Tantawy and Harry Gruyaert. He's thankful for the endless inspiration they give him for my work as a cinematographer, photographer and as a film director.
