After retiring from plumbing and volunteer fire fighting in San Antonio, Texas, Barney Smith began decorating toilet seat lids in 1991 at the age of 70. He uses the toilet lid as his pallet to which he has applied many numerous objects such as dog tags, ancient European castle keys, a marijuana leaf, shredded money, a piece of the insulation of the ill-fated Challenger spaceship, and other tokens of world culture. To date he has completed over 700 seats and still counting. He's been featured on NBC's "Later Today", CBS's "The Early Show", ABC, "Montel", TBS's "Ripley's Believe It or Not", The New York Times, National Geographic, and Life Magazine. His most recent claim to fame is being the subject of the video documentary "Commode Creations: The Artwork of Barney Smith" by director Danny Bourque.
