Sothean Nhieim was born in Cambodia in 1958 and started making Super 8 mm short documentaries in Paris at age 2O, after he had left his country in 1973 as a political refugee.His prolific work focuses on two historic trajectories of death: the mid 1970s genocide in Cambodia and the AIDS epidemic.He has filmed numerous New Year's celebrations and other ceremonies of the Khmer community abroad, as well as numerous Gay Pride marches and demonstrations.In 2001, he returned to his native country to film there.
