Born in Wisconsin, Studstrup studied journalism (University of Oregon), photography (Milwaukee Center for Photography), film (University of California-Santa Cruz) and writing (University of Tulsa). He is a graduate of the creative writing program at Brown. He edited (and taught film editing) in New York City for five years, and lives in Portland, Oregon. Studstrup's first edit (uncredited) was Wang Dang, for writer/director Tom Noonan. Studstrup says he appreciates editor Sidney Levin's likening of film editing to an Italian mosaic mural and editing decisions to the little tessera - the individual stones - that are placed in a large field. Ten editors, says Levin, will edit the same scene with the same fundamental construction. But each will place a little stone here or there that will color the entire scene. Studstrup has written a series of essays about visual sequencing and story telling for film, fiction and photobooks. Studstrup's editing partner and wife is the writer and documentary film editor Jody Jorgensen.
