Gordon Laurence Laverty was born March 31, 1924 in Alameda, California. Orphaned, he was raised alongside his younger brother Bruce R. Laverty, by his uncle, Arthur A. Ross in Burlingame, California. He attended Burlingame High School and began studies at the University of California, Berkeley, before enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II. During the war, he was deployed under the communications command of General Douglas MacArthur to New Guinea, The Philippines, and as a member of the army of occupation to Tokyo. Upon his return from service, he resumed and completed his studies in Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He then gained employment for one of the world's top water utilities, East Bay Municipal Utility District in Oakland, California, going on to become Director of Operations, retiring after 34 years of service. He participated in and led numerous professional and community organizations. He married Marjorie Pearson Laverty and had three children, Larry, Ross, and Annette Laverty. Gordon passed away on February 15, 2020 in Oakland, California, following a full life at age 95.
