Choun Malai

Choun Malai (Chhoun Malay) was one of Cambodia's hidden gems. She played a very important role in Cambodia's rock scene during the 1960's and 1970's. She was best known for her beautiful song voice and her music style. She said she started singing in her late teens, at least that was when she was recognized. She was also admired by the Royal Family for her talent. Her music ranged from classic Cambodian originals to Western and European translated hits such as Sinatra, The Beatles, Neil Diamond, etc. She had many close friends/musicians that are from her era. At the time of the Khmer Rouge Regime, Many things were not clear. Survival was priority. There are not too much details on other family members' situations. One of her younger brothers did refuge with her to the United States. She was known as "The Life of the Party". She has passed away.
