Holmér made a career in the Swedish police, starting from walking the beat and later taking a degree in law and becoming Chief of the Swedish National Security Police Agency ("Secret police") and later on, head of the Stockholm Municipal Police. At the assassination of Prime Minister Olof Palme on February 28, 1986, Holmér quickly became head of the investigations and held a number of legendary press briefings. He was forced out after a big police raid on exile Kurds living in Sweden had failed to substantiate his theory that this group had been involved in the murder. Later he worked for the UN on questions of the trade in narcotics.
