During the Pinochet dictatorship, his parents were politically persecuted, so there were granted asylum in Hamburg, when Rodrigo was 5 years old. He completed his Abitur at Gymnasium Heidberg with a average grade of 2.4. He has an older sister, Claudia, who is a musician too. Prior to getting to "Die Ärzte", he played in "Die Erben", "Die Goldenen Zitronen" and "Rainbirds", who are well known for their 1987-Hit "Blueprint". In the Band "Depp Jones", he played with Bela B., who was the drummer in "Die Ärzte", before the split up in 1988. "Depp Jones" split up in 1992. "Die Ärzte" got back together in 1993 and Rodrigo González became the new bassist of the band. He can play bass, guitar, drums, keyboard and piano, which he has taught himself. During their MTV Unplugged concert "Rock n Roll Realschule", he was the musical director and arranger for most of the songs. Since 2004, he plays in the band "Abwärts" too.
