Aram Vidal

Director | Writer
Date of birth : 08/14/1981
City of birth : Havana, Cuba

Aram Vidal is a filmmaker born in Cuba. He graduated in Communication at the University of Havana. His work has focused mainly on documentary films, although he has also written and directed fiction and animation. In his trilogy composed by "De Generación" (Cuba, 2007), "Ex Generación" (Mexico, 2009, and "El pez azul" (Cuba/Mexico, 2017), he addresses Cuba's political and social conflicts, from the perspective of young people and those who have emigrated off the island. His own condition as a migrant (exiled in Mexico since 2009) has led him to explore the theme of identity and personal reconstruction. A more dreamlike and experimental look marks his short fiction films "Recursivo" (2012), "Relevo (2013) and "Gato" (2016). In these films, originally scripted, he explores in an unusual way topics such as fear, madness and love. In "Gato" he experiments with the use of animated spaces to emphasize the protagonist's disconnection with his reality, while in "Recursivo" he constructs an imaginary location to recreate a dream condemned to repeat itself eternally. His documentaries and short fiction films have been screened at dozens of festivals around the world, including Clermont-Ferrand Festival, Havana New Filmmmakers Festival (Documentary Award), Gothenburg Festival, Entr'2 Marches at Cannes (Best Fiction Script award), Santiago Alvarez International Festival (Documentary Award), Los Angeles Cinefest, New York Film Week, Amsterdam Film Festival, Miami Independent Film Festival, Rhode Island Film Festival, among others. He has won artistic residencies such as the audiovisual award from the "Fondo de Cultura de México" (FONCA), production support from the "Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional", and art residency at the Swem Media Center in Virginia, US.
