Gemma Arterton

Gemma Arterton, born in Gravesend, Kent, grew up in a working-class family where creativity was encouraged. As a teenager she joined local theatre companies, gaining early stage experience and an award that secured her a grant to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She graduated in 2007 and quickly moved into professional work, beginning with television and stage collaborations before entering film. Her career developed through a balance of independent projects and large-scale productions, and she was the winner of Empire's Best Newcomer Award.
